WILLIAM

“You’re an idiot, Will.”

William glanced over at Butch as the big man rummaged about in the back of his black pickup truck.

“I’m aware of that, but in what context this time?”

“Are you kidding me?” Butch glanced over his shoulder, one hand resting on the open tailgate. “You were making out on the dance floor; it was hot as hell…and you ran away like a coward. So, yes, you’re an idiot.”

“She’s a witch, bro. A witch!”

“So what?” Butch turned on him and glared. “Let me ask you a question. If it had been, say, and I’m being facetious as Hell here, a Canadian who killed Charlie? Would you avoid and hate all Canadians for the rest of your life?”

“Canadians don’t have magic.”

“Oh, stop. Here.” Butch shoved the box into his arms. “Here to you. A bunch of aprons and a pair of non-slip shoes in her size. You’d just better hope she comes to work today.”

“I know. I’ve texted an apology, but she hasn’t responded.”

“You texted?” Butch shook his head. “Man, you are stone stupid. You never text an apology you push the little green phone icon and you call! Damn.”

Butch slammed his tailgate shut and moved toward the driver’s side of the truck. “Don’t screw this up, bro. You’ve got a good thing going. Try not to ruin it by being, y’know, you.”

“Yeah, screw you, too,” William said, though he had a smile on his face. He headed through the back door of the restaurant and heard an insistent tapping at the front door.

He stiffened up when he saw Stella standing outside the door, blue eyes peering in the curtain.

Will unlocked the door and allowed her inside. She stepped onto the tiled floor, her eyes bearing dark circles beneath them.

She didn’t sleep well, either.

They both tried to speak at the same time, stopped, and shared a nervous laugh.

“You go first,” she said.

Will nodded. “All right. I’m sorry I ran out on you last night. I was…a little bit, um, discombobulated when you turned out to be a witch. It was rude and inexcusable, and I hope you can forgive me.”

Stella let out a pained sigh and touched him on the arm. “Thank you. I guess I should have told you what I was, but, then again, since I’m from East Greenwich…”

“Right. You don’t have the scent of a shifter, or a demon, for that matter.”

“Well, I’m glad you don’t think I’m a demon,” she said with a laugh.

“Anyway, I’m sorry, and I hope we’re still…you know. Okay with each other.”

Stella smiled. She moved in close, intoxicating him with her scent and warmth. Stella leaned into him as she got on the tips of her toes so she could put her lips within inches of his ear.

“I was more than just okay with the way you grabbed my ass on the dance floor last night.”

Her hot whisper lingered on his skin and in his mind. Will’s mouth gaped open as she sauntered past him into the kitchen. “C’mon, boss man. Breakfast isn’t going to prep and cook itself.
